About the Project

The Journey Continues: African Americans in the Ozarks is a grass roots, interdisciplinary effort that explores themes such as:

  • The experiences of African Americans living and working in Springfield
  • The impact of history on the way African Americans perceive the community
  • The roles African American individuals, organizations and institutions have played in Springfield's history
  • How multimedia can be used to document and share individuals' perspectives in their own words

An interdisciplinary effort

The project began as a collaboration between sociology faculty members Lyle Foster and Tim Knapp, who completed a series of interviews for KSMU, Springfield's NPR affiliated radio station. When Foster and Knapp expanded into additional forms of media, The Journey Continues grew to include Lucie Amberg from the department of media, journalism and film.

Funding and support
