Scholarships Awarded to Five Department Students in 2007

During the Spring 2007 Semester the Department awarded scholarships to five outstanding students who were honored at both our annual Department Academic Reception as well as the College of Humanities and Public Affairs Scholarship Banquet (see the picture of Dr. Karl Kunkel, Department Head, presenting these students at the banquet).

The Walter O.Cralle Scholarship went to Andrea Hirsh.  Andrea is a Sociology major with minors in Gender Studies, Asian Studies, and Chinese.  She is a member of the Honors College and active in various student and community organizations.  For example, Andi volunteers at Delmar Gardens retirement home, Ozarks Public Television, the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield, the Ready Readers Program, and the Relay for Life.  She also is a founding member of the recently rejuvenated Sociology Club.  Ms. Hirsh plans to attend graduate school after completing her undergraduate degree.

Scholarships for Societal Studies went to Sarah Baty and Sarah Handlang.  Ms. Baty is Criminology major with a minor in International Relations.  Sarah volunteers at the Rare Breed, an outreach center for displaced and homeless youth.   After graduation she plans to either join the Peace Corps or enroll in the Defense and Strategic Studies graduate program through Missouri State.  Ms. Handlang is a double-major in Criminology and Chemistry.  She volunteered the past three summers at Logan Valley Christian Retreat and hopes to either work for a crime lab or enter a graduate program in Forensic Chemistry.

The Donald D. Landon Public Affairs Scholarship was presented to Nicholas Moseley.  Nick is a Criminology major and Sociology minor.  He spent time as a volunteer at Maggie’s Thrift Store in Springfield as part of a Criminology service-learning experience.  After graduation he would like to work for a federal law enforcement agency.

The Lloyd R. Young ScholaAdam Shook and Lloyd Youngrship recipient was Adam Shook, a double-major in Criminology and Sociology.  Adam volunteered for numerous church-related activities and is an active member of the Criminal Justice Society (a student organization).  After graduation he either will pursue a master’s degree in Criminology or work for a local police department.  See the picture of Adam and Dr. Young taken at the Scholarship Banquet.

Scholarship awards tremendously help students like Andrea, Sarah, Sarah, Nicholas and Adam achieve their educational and career dreams and goals.  Student Gives Presentation at Anthropology Conference

 Jason Shepard

Anthropology major Jason Shepard gave a presentation on Common Pool Resources and the Future of Artisanal Fishing in Bluefields Bay, Jamaica: A Study in Cooperative Management at the 84th annual meeting of the Central States Anthropological Society in Minneapolis in April.  Jason’s presentation was based on research he conducted with the Bluefields Bay Fishermen’s Friendly Society in Jamaica in June-July 2006.  It was very well-received and inspired an excellent discussion.
