Sociology Program Coordinator
Dr. John B. Harms was born and raised in Wilmette, Illinois and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1985 with a PhD in Sociology. He came to MSU (SMSU then) in 1985 and regularly teaches: SOC 309 (Work, Industry & Society); SOC 310 (Social Deviance); SOC 325 (Introduction to Sociological Theory); and SOC 398 (Public Sociology and Community Studies).
In 1997 Dr. Harms was one of the first recipients of the College of Humanities and Public Affairs teaching awards, and in 1999 received a University teaching award. In 2002 he also received a service award from the College of Humanities and Public Affairs, and in 2008 received the Missouri State University Foundation award for service. His research interests include social theory, political economy, social capital, food in society, and the sociology of work.
Dr. Harms is currently the vice-president of the Missouri Conference of the American Association of University Professors and was president of the organization from 2003-2007. He is also a member of the American Sociological Association and the Midwest Sociological Society.
