Dr. Robin Amonker, a native of Goa, India, has been a member of the department since 1968. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Saint Louis University in 1973, and his areas of expertise include human ecology, demography, and quantitative methods. His current research interests include population trends and projections, mortality, fertility and family planning. His most recent publications deal with subjects such as demographic change in Missouri and the Ozarks, and mortality, fertility and family planning in India. In 2005, he received a Research Award from the College of Humanities and Public Affairs.
Dr. Amonker teaches SOC 150 (Introduction to Society), SOC 301 (Research Methodology), GEP 397 (Population: Trends, Issues, and Policies), and SOC 505 (Population Analysis). He is a past recipient of the Missouri State University Foundation's Excellence in Teaching Award and in 1999 received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award for his IDS 110 course.
Dr. Amonker served on a variety of University, College and Departmental committees. Some of the committees on which he is currently serving include the University Convocations Committee, the Presidential Scholars Selection Committee, and the Springfield Area Planning Forum. He is the treasurer of the Missouri Sociologoical Association.
Dr. Amonker served as the President of Planned Parenthood of Southwest Missouri from 1976 to 1979 and received Outstanding Professional for Human Services award from the American Academy of Human Services. He is an active member of the Asian community and served as the President of the Southwest Missouri Asian Association from 1975 to 2004. From 1984 to 2002 Dr. Amonker was advisor to the Association of International Students whose annual dinner and festival of entertainment benefiting International Students Scholarship Program continues to be one of the most popular events on the Missouri State University campus. In 2006, he received a Service Award from the College of Humanities and Public Affairs.
